You may remember that the Crystal Beach Lakeview Community Association supported the Ottawa Carleton Wildlife Centre (OCWC) in its fight for a modernized and more humane wildlife strategy. As reported on this website in June, Ian McConnachie spoke on behalf of the community to a Joint Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Environment and Climate Change Committee
Donna Dubreuil, head of the OCWC, wrote us during the summer to say, “We are grateful for your support and are so pleased to share with you the victory that has been achieved on behalf of wildlife.” She said, “As you know, the Ottawa-Carleton Wildlife Centre has worked tirelessly for years to finally see progressive wildlife policies in Ottawa. Particularly, in urging the City to reject the unconscionable lethal approach it takes with respect to beavers and other wildlife.
We are very pleased to tell you that our efforts, made possible by your support and that of CBLCA, have paid off.”
You can see the details of the victory in the OCWC’s summer 2024 newsletter.
As a community with greenery on pretty much all four sides of us, a good relationship with our non-human neighbours is important to Crystal Beach Lakeview! We’re very pleased to hear that the City will no longer automatically default to killing beavers when they can manage them more humanely with flow devices.
