A Joint Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Environment and Climate Change Committee met Monday, June 17, to discuss a report on staff’s review of the City’s decade-old wildlife management strategy. Amendments were made at the meeting and more may be made. The final strategy will go to Council in the fall.
Ian McConnachie, former Chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure, and Planning Committee spoke on behalf of the Crystal Beach Lakeview Community Association, urging a more humane and modern approach in line with the requests of the Ottawa Carleton Wildlife Centre. Of particular concern was the City’s strategy for beavers, a key species for fighting climate change and preserving biological diversity. Like almost all of the delegations, CBLCA urged a broader environmental perspective with less focus on conflict. Ian also commented on the quality of the public consultation and urged a robust role for the proposed advisory board.
Ian’s delegation is here.
