As we wrap up another year in Crystal Beach Lakeview, I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a joyful New Year to you and your families. This season always reminds me how fortunate we are to live in a neighbourhood where people look out for one another, pitch in when needed, and take pride in the place we call home.
Earlier this month, we held our Annual General Meeting at Maki House. Thank you to everyone who came out — your presence matters more than you might realize. The AGM is where we review the year, elect our board, and set our direction for the months ahead. Without enough residents in the room, we can’t reach quorum, and without quorum, the association simply can’t function. Your participation keeps this community running!
One theme that came through clearly again this year is the importance of volunteers. Every program we run, every event we host, every rink flood, every planning file review — it all happens because neighbours step forward. The benefits ripple outward: a vibrant Maki Rink, youth sports, community events like Wheel Day and the Winter Carnival, local advocacy, and a steady voice on issues that affect our neighbourhood. None of it exists without people willing to give a little of their time.
I’m also pleased to share a few recent decisions from the Board that reflect our commitment to supporting local initiatives and strengthening community resources. We approved $900 for a secondary snowblower to support the dedicated volunteers who maintain the Maki Rink — a small investment that will make a big difference during heavy snowfalls. We also approved $500 for the Ottawa West Winter Trail, helping connect the Kanata Nordic network to the Britannia trail system and ensuring our residents have access to high‑quality winter recreation close to home. And in the spirit of the season, we contributed $500 to FAMSAC, our local food cupboard, to support families in need across the west end.
As we head into 2026, I’m grateful for the energy, generosity, and resilience of this community. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved — even in a small way — I encourage you to reach out. Your time and talents truly make a difference.
Wishing you all a peaceful holiday season and a bright year ahead.
Sincerely,
Nicolas Martinez
