It was good news to learn that the NCC was planning to carry out a stormwater retention project on the farm just south of Moodie Station (Field Trip Farm) even before the floods.
The CBLCA Flood Subcommittee has just sent the following email to the federal government:
“Lakeview Crystal Beach Community Association supports the Stillwater Creek Floodplain Wetland Restoration – Moodie Drive, Ottawa (Field Trip Farm) project to retain water just south of our community.
We regret that we did not hear of the plan before the deadline for public comments on June 3 and hope that our feedback will still be useful. As you probably know, our community was devastated by the floods of the July 1st Extreme Weather Event, and we are still finding it difficult to think about anything more than just dealing with the damage and trauma.
While we believe that much more research must be done to determine the causes of the flooding and to prevent future damage, we are very pleased to see the initiative the NCC is already taking with a project that may help to protect us.
As the NCC reviews the Greenbelt master plan this time around, attention must be paid to the Greenbelt’s role in providing resilience against climate change. The next extreme weather event could occur tomorrow.”
CBLCA and the Greenbelt Master Plan Review
The CBLCA sends representatives to the Public Advisory Group for the NCC’s Greenbelt Master Plan review, and we will continue to advocate for the preservation of the Greenbelt and for its role in climate change mitigation and remediation.
Wetland rehabilitation project west of Moodie Dr.
Although on a smaller scale, the purpose of the new project is to manage stormwater like the Wetland Rehabilitation project on the other side of Moodie– a project that the CBLCA supported in the past.

It’s eerie going though old newsletters to see how many were about emergency preparedness, the derecho, flood control, overflowing ditches, climate change…. The community has been thinking about these subjects for a long time, without ever really imagining what was coming for us.
