Maki House has been a cornerstone of the Crystal Beach-Lakeview community for over five decades. Originally opened in 1971 as a modest field house, it served as a small but vital gathering space for local residents. In its final year under the City of Nepean, the building underwent a major expansion thanks to a successful motion led by local councillor Merv Sullivan. Funds earmarked for a failed bid to purchase part of the closed St. Thomas school were redirected to double the size of the facility, creating the vibrant space we know and enjoy today. This transition officially marked Maki House’s shift to full community use on December 23, 2000.
That moment was a turning point, empowering the community to take ownership of the space and shape it into a hub for local engagement. Over the years, Maki House has hosted countless events, meetings, and celebrations, becoming a symbol of grassroots involvement and civic pride.
As we approach its 25th anniversary as a community-run facility, there’s renewed interest in commemorating its legacy and envisioning its future. We invite all residents to join us for a special Annual General Meeting on Thursday, December 11th at Maki House. This combined event will celebrate the history of our community space while also looking ahead to the next chapter. Come share your memories, ideas, and aspirations—alongside festive treats, warm drinks, and important conversations about the future of our association.
Let’s honour the past and build the future—together.
