Hi Neighbours,
As we settle into fall, there’s a lot happening in Crystal Beach–Lakeview, and plenty of work underway behind the scenes at the CBLCA. From flood-related advocacy and infrastructure concerns to winter programming and community events, our executive and volunteers have a full plate. I wanted to share a few updates and, most importantly, invite more of you to get involved.
Continuing the work on flooding and infrastructure
Our Flood Subcommittee continues to push for answers, better communication, and meaningful action on the flooding issues affecting our neighbourhood. These challenges haven’t gone away, and we know how important it is for residents to have their concerns heard. We’re continuing to advocate with the City and other levels of government, while working to build broader community engagement around these issues.
Our Transportation, Infrastructure & Planning (TIP) team is also working to move a neighbourhood infrastructure survey forward. Hearing directly from residents will help us better understand local priorities and strengthen our ability to advocate for improvements. We’ll share more information as the survey progresses.
This work takes persistence, and I want to thank everyone who has continued to contribute their time, expertise, and energy.
Looking ahead to winter
Planning is also underway for the months ahead. The board has approved a budget for our Winter Carnival, and preparations for winter programming are progressing. These activities are a big part of what makes our neighbourhood a great place to live, giving families opportunities to connect and neighbours a reason to get together during the colder months.
We’re also working through some challenges involving the basement at Maki House following flooding. Getting this space addressed is important to supporting the facility and the programs that depend on it. We’ll continue working with the relevant partners to find a path forward.
Our youth sports program is another priority. It serves many local children, but the workload involved in running it is significant. We’re exploring ways to share the responsibilities and make the program more sustainable. If you have experience organizing activities, coordinating registrations, or simply want to help local kids stay active, we’d love to hear from you.
Please join us at our Annual General Meeting!
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Sunday, November 22, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Maki House, Sullivan Room, 19 Leeming Drive.
The AGM is your opportunity to hear what the association has been working on, learn about priorities for the coming year, meet your neighbours, and help shape the future of Crystal Beach–Lakeview. We’ll also hold board elections and welcome nominations from residents interested in serving our community.
We need at least 20 community members in attendance for the AGM to be valid. That makes your participation particularly important. Please mark your calendar, spread the word, and come out to support your community association. Whether this is your first AGM or you’ve attended many before, you are welcome.
We could use your help!
One thing I’m continually reminded of is just how much a small group of committed volunteers can accomplish. But to keep our association strong, responsive, and resilient over the long term, we need more people to share the work.
There are several ways to help:
- Flood Subcommittee: Help advocate for answers and solutions to neighbourhood flooding concerns.
- Parks & Recreation: Support youth sports and help make local programming easier to organize and sustain.
- Special Events: Help with Wheel Day, Winter Carnival, and other activities that bring neighbours together.
- Transportation, Infrastructure & Planning: Help us engage with local issues and advocate for improvements to our neighbourhood.
- Communications Director: Help keep residents informed through our newsletter, website, and other communications.
- Executive support and backups: Work alongside current board members, learn the ropes, and help ensure continuity when someone needs a break or moves on from their role.
You don’t need to take on a major commitment right away, and you don’t need prior board experience. Whether you have a particular skill to offer, can lend a hand at an event, or simply want to learn more, there’s a place for you.
A strong community association shouldn’t depend on just a handful of people. By bringing more neighbours into the fold, we can share the workload, build new ideas, and ensure the CBLCA continues to serve our community for years to come.
If you’re interested in helping, please reach out to the association or come speak with us at the AGM.
Thanks, as always, to everyone who continues to volunteer, share feedback, attend events, and support our neighbourhood. I look forward to seeing many of you on November 22!
Sincerely,
Nicolas Martinez
President, Crystal Beach Lakeview Community Association
