September Message from Monica

Summer has come and gone faster than we had imagined possible! I hope yours was relaxing and refreshing and that you are now ready for the fall, whatever it has in store for you. There are many fall activities for CBLCA and we will continue to keep you in the loop!

During the summer, CBLCA’s executive met to consider our role in the upcoming federal election. While we won’t be hosting a debate, we plan to engage with all candidates for our riding in order to get a clearer picture of their position on issues that matter to us all. We hope to share an overview of what we hear from them with you in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more on that.

Over the summer, the community expressed concern that there has been no resolution on the use of Cash-in-Lieu funds put aside for our community. I have shared these concerns with Councillor Theresa Kavanagh. Theresa remains committed to the funds going toward our community, and is supportive of a plan to try to move this along.

Theresa has also told me that there is no official word yet on whether Corkstown Road will continue with two-way traffic. But the ideas presented by our community are being actively considered. Out Transportation, Transit and Infrastructure Committee (who certainly had a busy summer) has heard from the City that discussions have been initiated with the National Capital Commission to look into solutions to continue to enable eastbound traffic along Corkstown.

Now on to plans for the fall. Among them is to have a conversation about the future of the Friendship Club. This weekly Tuesday afternoon gathering, led by Judy Leeson, is entering a new phase, as Judy has indicated she wishes to step aside from her role. Judy has wisely suggested that this is a good time for reflection on how we, as a community, want to engage with and among older residents. We invite you to participate in this conversation on Tuesday, September 10th at 2 pm at Maki House. And of course, a big thank you to Judy for her leadership.

Another plan is to explore what we want for our community in relation to the Official Plan the City is developing for our future. I encourage you to read more about this elsewhere on this site. We are also looking into the possibility of hosting a community meeting or holding an engagement session during our Annual General Meeting later this fall to really delve into some of the issues as a community. We are working to confirm the date and agenda for the AGM and will communicate this with you shortly.

Please check out our fall offering of activities at Maki House – there is so much to do right here in our neighbourhood!

And of course, an event coming up very soon is the CBL Endless Summer block party! You can find out all the details by clicking here!

So, we are off to an active start to what always seems like the beginning of a new year. I hope you will join in the many activities available to those of us lucky enough to live in Crystal Beach Lakeview!
