Wheel Day: A Community Event for All Ages!

The day starts at 10:30am with a bike parade!  Come on your bike for a leisurely group ride through our neighbourhood streets.  Departure from Corkstown Park at 10:45am. Horns, bells and cheering spectators are welcome along the route –click here to see a detailed map.

The City of Ottawa Bike Rodeo for kids 4-10 years old is scheduled from 1:00-3:00pm.  Come ride through the mini Main Street and learn essential bicycle handling and traffic skills for young cyclists in a fun festival type atmosphere. Topics include helmet fitting, bicycle maintenance, handling, signaling, gears, braking, avoiding road hazards and more. Participants must know how to ride.

Buy and Sell – Come to buy a new-to-you bike, scooter, trike and more!  If you have items with wheels to sell (e.g. bikes, roller blades, scooters, wheelbarrows, strollers, etc), you can drop them off at Corkstown Park between 9:00-10:30am at Corkstown Park.  CBLCA will sell your items and you get 80% of the sale price.

Biking for Beers – This is a group ride departing from Corkstown Park at 2:30pm to the new Kichesippi Brewery in Bells Corners (2265 Robertson Road).  The route is approx. 6km and will follow the Watts Creek bike path onto the Trans Canada Trail through the forest.  Please note this route is dirt trail with some elevation.  Non-bikers are also welcome to join after 3:00pm at the brewery.

Lastly, we still need many volunteers to help make this day run smoothly.  Specifically, we need volunteers for:

  • Bike rodeo (1:00-3:00)
    • Bike safety educator
    • Helmet fitting educator
    • ABC (air, brakes, chain) bike maintenance

You will have a brief orientation when you arrive. Your role will be to help the kids navigate the mini Main Street using proper bike hand signals, teach kids (and parents) how to properly wear bike helmets, and/or check the air, brakes and chain on all bikes participating in the rodeo.

  • Set-up (8:30-10:30am). Help pitch tents and set-up tables and signs.
  • Take-down (2:30-4:30pm). Help take down tents and clean up the site.
  • Bike Parade Leader (10:30-11:30am).  Ride your bike through the neighbourhood on the parade route. The lead rider is already confirmed, but we need a few people in the middle of the pack and to pull up the rear ☺
  • Bike Parade Traffic Managers (10:30-11:30am). Look good in a safety vest and help direct cyclists and (limited) traffic along the route.

To volunteer for this awesome event, contact Krystal Taylor kltaylor22@yahoo.ca or 613-791-1089 (call or text).  All ages of volunteers are encouraged and welcome. Required volunteer forms for highschool students will be signed. All volunteers are also invited to an appreciation BBQ on Saturday June 15th.

This event is rain or shine. All events are free except food, beers at brewery, and bike tune-ups.
